As we head into summer and the forecast is looking like one of the warmest on record, now’s the time to think about the fire risk to your home and garden.
At Haden Welbeck we’ve seen how quickly fires can start and spread during prolonged dry, sunny spells. With more people in their gardens during the warmer months, fire risk is on the rise.
The Facts
Recent industry data shows a big increase in fire-related claims in spring and summer, particularly in April and May when the sun was shining. Many of these started outside the home, often from:
- Barbecues
- Garden bonfires
- Fire pits
- Careless disposal of hot ash or embers
In some cases fire spread from neighbour’s gardens, destroying sheds, fences, decking and even homes. Others were from lightning strikes, which are more frequent in late summer and can cause fires through damaged roofing or electrical faults.
Real-Life Examples of Recent Claims:
- Garden bonfires setting nearby fencing and outbuildings alight
- Embers from barbecues setting sheds on fire
- Hot ash from fire pits re-igniting and damaging garages
- Lightning striking loft spaces, causing electrical fires
- Batteries overheating and catching fire whilst charging unattended
How to Stay Safe
To help you stay safe this summer here are a few simple fire safety tips:
- Be careful with bonfires:
Don’t have bonfires in dry or windy weather. If you must have one, never leave it unattended and always have water or a hosepipe nearby. - Use barbecues safely:
Set barbecues on non-flammable surfaces, away from grass, sheds and fencing. Allow coals and ash to cool completely before disposal as they can remain hot for days. - Be battery aware:
Unplug tools and devices once they’re fully charged. Don’t charge batteries overnight or when unattended, especially in outdoor spaces or garages. - Watch what’s on the windowsill:
Sunlight can be magnified through glass bottles or mirrors and cause fires. Keep such items away from direct sunlight. - Dispose of cigarettes properly:
Never throw away cigarettes or matches near dry grass or decking. Make sure they’re fully extinguished and disposed of safely.
Your Local Broker’s Final Word
We all love warm sunny days but they do come with risks. Fires can spread quickly when the ground is dry. Many garden features, wooden sheds, decking, fencing, are highly flammable and can allow flames to travel from the garden to the home.
A typical garden fire claim can cost £16,000. A sobering reminder of how quickly a small fire can cause destruction.
