Vehicle Theft on the Rise Across the UK

New data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveals that vehicle thefts have increased by 74% over the last decade, highlighting growing risks for UK motorists.

In the 12 months to 31 March 2025, there were 121,825 reported vehicle thefts (up from 70,216 in 2015). According to vehicle tracking and recovery experts Inn-Track, this marks the highest level of car theft since 2008, when over 137,000 vehicles were reported stolen or taken without consent.

Where Are Vehicle Theft Rates Rising Most?

Following a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to police forces nationwide, Inn-Track found that certain areas, including Bedfordshire, North Yorkshire, and Surrey, have seen particularly sharp increases in car theft and aggravated vehicle taking.

Neil Thomas, Director of Investigative Services at Inn-Track, commented: “These figures should be a wake-up call for motorists, insurers, and law enforcement alike. The fact that vehicle thefts are at their highest level in over a decade shows how emboldened criminals have become.”

Only 1 in 10 Stolen Cars Had a Tracker

The report also found that just 10% of stolen vehicles in 2024 were fitted with tracking devices. As a result, recovery rates remain low: only 32% of stolen cars were returned to their owners in the year to March 2024, leaving 68% never recovered (up from 56% the year before).

Thomas, a former police detective, added: “Even as vehicle technology improves, criminals continue to adapt. National recovery rates remain around 32%, but with reliable tracking and recovery systems, that can increase to as much as 99%.”
